8 Reasons Why You Should Consider T’ai Chi to Lose Weight

An increasing number of people around the world choose t’ai chi over other forms of exercise to improve their health. No wonder. T’ai chi has been associated in studies with lower risk of disease; practiced regularly, it can help reduce the chances of developing diabetes, heart problems, cancer and more. And then there are its stress relief properties, and the beneficial effects on muscle strength, balance and coordination.

But that’s not all. T’ai chi is also becoming popular as the exercise of choice for losing weight. And for some very good reasons!

Here is what they are:

  1. T’ai chi does make you lose weight. Some people think that its slow, gentle movements are not enough to burn calories and reduce body fat. Not true. In studies, practicing t’ai chi regularly has produced significant weight loss even in obese people, and its effect lasted for months after the last t’ai chi class.
  2. Other forms of exercise make you lose weight as a result of the physical activity you do. T’ai chi goes well beyond this; it also helps you eat less. It does so by lowering your levels of stress–a major cause of comfort eating. So, you are less likely to reach for food when you are not really hungry.
  3. Because it’s a gentle, low-impact form of exercise, t’ai chi is the ideal choice if you have never exercised before or have been inactive for a long period of time, which is often the case for people overweight.
  4. T’ai chi is also an excellent alternative if other types of physical activity are too strenuous or painful for you, for example, because you have a medical problem. In fact, you can even lose weight while improving some of the symptoms your problem is causing. This is the case, for instance, is you suffer from arthritis, for which there is evidence that t’ai chi helps improve the mobility of affected joints, especially ankles, hips and knees.
  5. T’ai chi has no ‘age limit.’ It doesn’t put much pressure on joints and bones. And, for this reason, it is suitable for people of all ages, if done correctly. So, whether you are in your 30s, 60s or older, and want to lose a few extra pounds, t’ai chi is for you.
  6. There is no need with t’ai chi to travel to, and pay for, the gym. You can work towards reaching a healthy weight anywhere. And you don’t need expensive equipment, either. All you need is yourself and a little bit of time and determination.
  7. If you are a wheelchair user, you probably know that you are at high risk for weight gain. T’ai chi includes a wide range of movements developed to suit your specific needs. So, it can help you maintain a healthy weight without complex and/or expensive adaptations, as it is the case with some other types of exercise.
  8. There are many different styles of t’ai chi. You can easily find the one that suits you best, and that you enjoy the most. This will help you stay motivated and stick to your weight loss plan.
